Irrfan Khan’s fight against cancer

Irrfan Khan and his fight against cancer:

Irrfan Khan

Irrfan Khan, a talented and renowned actor known particularly for his roles in Salaam Bombay!, Life in a… Metro, and Hindi Medium, amongst other notable films in both Hindi cinema and Hollywood, put it best when he quoted Margaret Mitchell in the acknowledgement of his own fight with neuroendocrine cancer. “Life is under no obligation to give us what we expect.”

Irrfan released a statement letting the world know that he had been diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumor, a type of cancer after he was forced to stop filming his current show.

So let us try and understand “what is a neuroendocrine tumour?

In order to understand more of what Irrfan Khan’s neuroendocrine cancer is, we have to look at the root of the issue, the hormone-releasing cells.

Even though people (teenagers going through puberty especially) love to hate various hormonal processes, hormones are actually extremely important for the regulatory processes in our body.

The hormone-producing system in our body is called the endocrine system.

A few notable components of this system include the hypothalamus in the brain, the pituitary gland, thyroid glands, the pancreas, and the adrenal gland.

Hormones are transported via the bloodstream to catalyze targeted tissues into action.

They control body functions as simple and fundamental as digestion and breathing. Neuroendocrine cancers occur when hormone-producing and nerve cells that make up the endocrine system multiply in an out-of-control fashion, and a malignant tumour is formed.

What could be the possible Treatment Options for Neuroendocrine Cancer for Irrfan?

Going back from the biological to the mental aspects of approaching this diagnosis. If we were to supplement the quote Irrfan chose with Maya Angelou’s “you may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them.”

A combination of these thoughts would paint a picture of how Irrfan is approaching his journey and fight. In internalizing that uncertainty is the only certainty, Khan actually opened himself up to this whole other facet of the human experience, and in doing so, leaves a little bit of his fear of his future behind.
